The community garden project at Saxon Way is an exciting programme of help for local residents offered by adults with learning disabilities, which gives our project workers a sense of worth and teaches them independent life skills, as well as
helping pensioners and private customers.

The service was established in 1988 and the service users were based at Bacons End day centre. “With the encouragement of parents, carers, staff and the Council, along with ongoing support from the Family Care Trust, we have been able to strike out on our own” said the Services Manager.

Since 2007, the project has grown from strength to strength, “We now have a large team of service users and 2 full time staff members and 2 fully equipped vehicles with trailers”, said our Manager.

“In the winter we tidy gardens and community areas for Solihull MBC as well as our own private customers”, he added, “and then in April we start our many grass cutting contracts. We also undertake mini landscaping projects such as patios, erecting fencing and building raised beds/planters. On site at CGS, we have a farm shop selling fresh free range eggs, plants, hanging baskets and produce from the farm”.

Every service users attends educational courses with Birmingham Metropolitan College that are tailored towards their individual needs and upon completion receive accredited qualifications.
